Controlling energy demand

  • 20 October 2022

It would seem that energy costs need our attention this winter. Costs of gas and electricity remain high, and while we cannot directly influence the rates per kilowatt hour we are paying, we can take a serious look at strategies to reduce the volume of gas and electricity we are consuming.

There would seem to be some ambivalence in government as to the provision of advice to achieve this. However, the usual tried and tested strategies are worth revisiting.

Here’s what the Citizen’s Advice – https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ – have posted on this topic:

There are ways to reduce how much electricity and gas you use. For example, you can:

  • use your tumble dryer less, if you have one – try to dry your clothes outside or by an open window instead;
  • run your washing machine at 30 degrees and make sure you wash a full load when you can;
  • use LED or other energy-efficient light bulbs;
  • turn off plug sockets at the wall if you’re not using them;
  • close your curtains in the evening to keep in heat when it’s cold; or
  • make sure your fridge is set between 3 and 5 degrees and defrost your freezer regularly.

There are also complex assortments of grants available to reduce your costs or contribute to clear bills with your supplier.

Business readers who rely on keeping their premises warm or who use significant energy as part of their production processes will face even more challenging times this winter.

If you need help to revisit business plans or to create new strategies to survive these increased costs, please call.
