The present hiatus on the “B” word issue – leaving the EU is fast outpacing all other front runners as the issue to avoid talking about – begs the question where do we go from here? What are we waiting for?
All of us managing a business with any connections to other EU member states is fast becoming a great source of inspiration for the next Carry On movie. And yet it is not UK businesses that are causing problems, it is the members of the House of Parliament.
It is starting to feel as if “red tape” is being transformed into “red elastic”. As the weeks and months go by, since the fateful referendum, businesses seek clarity and all we witness on the part of our elected representatives is obfuscation. Every attempt at a step forward, from those of us who are keen to get on with it, merely increases the tension in the “elastic” as politicians dither, dangling extremes in our future trading with the EU as if the only consequence of importance was getting re-elected.
To answer the question “what are we waiting for” we need look no further than we are waiting for clarity. Bring back the old red tape. Bring back a set of rules that we and our suppliers and customers in the EU can adapt to and finally, allow us to get on with it.
Hopefully, members of all parties will come back from their Easter break ready and willing to reach consensus and close the lid on this issue.
We are waiting…
