That bastion of sun bathers, the deckchair, has a long pedigree.
Chairs of this type were discovered in the tombs of ancient Egypt, and in 1886 a patent was taken out by John Moore, from Macclesfield, for the manufacture of adjustable, folding chairs.
If true, John Moore may have been pipped at the post by an American, John Cham, who submitted a design for simple, wooden folding chairs with woven backs in 1855. Whatever their pedigree, the humble deckchair has been the “must-have” for sunbathers on beaches, piers and cruise ships for over a hundred years.
And how many of us have ended in a tangled heap trying to unfold the folded version into a comfortable lounger?
